The Boxcar Children

The Boxcar Children was one of my favorite books from childhood.  I'm thankful to my mom for saving my own copy of it to share with my kiddos.  Now that we are done with our Little House on the Prairie series, we are expanding our horizons with our homeschool book club.  This meeting, Dylan and Gracie transition from being students to leading activities of their own.
Dylan came up with trivia questions of varying difficulties for the kids to answer based on the book.  Any kind of competition appeals to him...

Gracie decided to teach the kids how to make their own cherry dumplings, like the boxcar children enjoyed eating at the doctor's house.  I tried to make a few very quickly for the moms to try and the kids came out better than mine.  Bill enjoyed eating the leftovers for breakfast.
Reuben thinking hard to answer a question in the trivia challenge...

Grammy and Caleb in their usual spot reading together. We love the Fly Guy books.
Weston made his own cherry dumpling too.  It's nice to see him start to join in on activities.

We have a new member of our reading group. The Short family has now added Rudy to their family and he gets to come visit during our meetings.  There never is a shortage of moms or kids to hold him.
In the book, the kids teach their youngest brother how to read by using the burnt end of a stick to write with.  Mrs. Medina showed the kids how to do this with burnt toothpicks.
Marilyn brought lots of boxes, containers, paper, cardboard, and other odds and ends for the kids to make their own projects.  The boxcar children were very resourceful with the few things they had, and the kids spent a long time coming up with various ideas.  Gracie made a bed for her dolls, whereas most of the rest of the projects involved dropping things from the loft to see if they would fly.

I think Abby's parachute actually floated down the best of all.  Here we see Dylan giving his a try.  Next book up is Charlotte's Web.
